The U.S. Postal Service will suspend mail delivery and close all offices on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in observance of the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter. Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. President Joe Biden announced the official Day of Mourning to honor Carter.

In a statement, Biden said, “With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. He was a man of great character and courage, hope, and optimism.”

On January 9, federal offices, including the U.S. Postal Service, will be closed. Mail services will resume on Friday, January 10.

However, private shipping companies UPS and FedEx will operate as usual on the Day of Mourning.

Mail delivery halt on Carter mourning

President Carter will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., at 10 a.m. on January 9.

President Biden is scheduled to deliver a eulogy at the ceremony. Later that day, a private hometown funeral service will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, at 3:45 p.m.

Carter’s legacy includes significant contributions to global peace, health initiatives, and human rights advocacy. These achievements will be remembered and honored during the national observances on January 9.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also suspend trading on January 9 to join the nation in mourning the former president. This follows a tradition dating back to 1865 when the New York Stock Exchange closed for several days after President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Tal Cohen, president of Nasdaq, said, “The financial industry collectively made a decision to honor what he’s done, the service he’s provided as president — and after he’s been president.”

While most banks will remain open on January 9, it is advisable to contact local branches for specific information regarding their hours on the Day of Mourning.
