Rosita Missoni, the renowned Italian fashion designer who co-founded the Missoni Fashion House with her husband Ottavio, passed away on Wednesday at her home in Sumirago, Italy. She was 93 years old. Angela Mariani, the communications consultant for the Missoni brand, confirmed Missoni’s death.

The cause of death was not disclosed. Rosita Missoni and her husband started their knitwear business in 1953. Over the next few decades, they transformed it into a leading fashion house known for its distinctive colorful and patterned designs.

The Missonis’ innovative use of zigzag patterns, stripes, and vivid colors became their signature style. Their designs gained international recognition in the 1960s and 1970s, making Missoni a household name. Born Rosita Jelmini on November 20, 1931, in Golasecca, Italy, Missoni grew up in a family involved in the embroidery business.

Missoni’s vibrant legacy in fashion

This background influenced her unique approach to fashion and textiles. Missoni met her husband Ottavio in 1948 while studying English in London.

They married in 1953 and established their small knitwear store in Gallarate, near Milan. The couple’s designs caused a stir in 1967 when they sent braless models wearing sheer tops down the runway at a fashion show in Florence. Despite the controversy, the Missonis focused on their signature knitwear, which became central to the brand’s success.

The Missoni brand remains a family-run business, with the couple’s children and grandchildren playing integral roles in its creative direction and management. Rosita Missoni’s passing marks the end of an era for the fashion industry. Her innovative designs and use of color brought joy to many wardrobes worldwide.

She is survived by her children Luca and Angela and nine grandchildren and their families. The fashion world mourns the loss of a true pioneer and visionary.
