Quaid Evacuates

Dennis Quaid shared his experience evacuating from the Palisades Fire. The fire has destroyed over 5,000 structures in the region. Quaid woke up on Tuesday to see a large plume of smoke.

By Wednesday, the fire was only 150 yards from his house. “Those helicopter pilots are incredible, what they do. And I can’t say enough about the firefighters and the first responders in this town.

We got some good ones, good people here,” Quaid said. Quaid feels lucky that his home is on the edge of the first evacuation zone. Many of his friends have lost their homes to the fire.

“So we’ve had it lucky. I have so many friends who have lost — my agent, he lost both of his houses, and another good friend over at Palisades, he just moved into a house and was renting the other one. He lost both of them,” he said.

Quaid wonders how long it will take for people to rebuild after losing their homes.

Quaid’s evacuation experience during fire

“What do you do, just to rebuild?

You start thinking about how long it takes to put a house together and then you can’t really hold it in your mind,” he said. The fires started earlier in the week due to a big windstorm. So far, they have forced about 105,000 people to evacuate.

The fires have also destroyed at least 5,316 structures, including 426 homes. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has gotten 13 missing persons reports. President Joe Biden extended his trip to Los Angeles to meet with people affected by the fires.

He declared the fires a major disaster. “Over 100,000 people have been ordered to evacuate communities impacted by the Southern California wildfires,” Biden stated. “At least two people have been killed, and many more are injured — including firefighters.

It’s devastating. To the residents of Southern California: We are with you.”

The Palisades Fire shows how wildfires are always a threat in Southern California. Changing climate conditions and heavy winds make the fires worse.
